How often should I get my car serviced?

Regular car service intervals depend on the make and model of your vehicle, as well as the type of driving you do. Generally, it’s recommended to have your vehicle serviced every 6 months or 5,000 to 7,500 kilometers (3,000 to 5,000 miles). However, it’s always best to refer to your vehicle’s owner manual for the manufacturer’s specific service intervals.

What are the signs that my vehicle needs maintenance or repair?

Common signs that your vehicle may need maintenance or repairs include:

  • Unusual noises (grinding, squealing, etc.)
  • Warning lights on your dashboard (check engine, oil, etc.)
  • Decreased fuel efficiency
  • Vibrations or pulling while driving
  • Difficulty starting or stalling
  • Strange smells (burning, gas, etc.) If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to bring your vehicle in for an inspection.
How do I know if my car’s brakes need to be repaired?

If you notice any of the following signs, it’s time to have your brakes checked:

  • Squeaking or squealing noises when braking
  • Grinding sounds when stopping
  • Pedal feels soft or sinks to the floor
  • Vibrations or shaking when applying the brakes
  • The car pulls to one side when braking
  • A longer distance is needed to stop Brake problems can be serious, so it’s important to have them inspected by a professional as soon as possible.
Can I drive with a check engine light on?

It’s not recommended to continue driving with the check engine light on. While it could be a minor issue, it could also indicate a serious problem like engine misfire, faulty emissions, or even a failing transmission. If the light is blinking, this usually indicates a more urgent issue, and you should stop driving immediately and have your vehicle inspected.

Why does my car need a wheel alignment?

A wheel alignment is necessary to ensure that your tires are set to the optimal position for even wear and proper handling. If your vehicle pulls to one side, if your steering wheel is off-center, or if your tires show uneven wear, your vehicle may need an alignment. A proper alignment helps improve fuel efficiency, extends tire life, and ensures safe handling.

What should I do if my car overheats?

If your car starts to overheat, pull over safely and turn off the engine immediately. Allow the car to cool down before attempting to check the radiator or coolant levels. Overheating can be caused by a variety of issues such as a coolant leak, malfunctioning thermostat, or a damaged water pump. It’s important to have your car inspected as soon as possible to avoid engine damage.

How often should I replace my tires?

Tires typically need to be replaced every 4 – 6 years, (80,000 – 120,000km) though this can vary depending on factors such as driving conditions, tire type, and wear. Signs that your tires may need replacing include low tread depth, sidewall damage, bulges, or frequent punctures. It’s important to monitor tire health regularly to ensure safe driving conditions.

How can I improve the lifespan of my vehicle?

To extend the life of your vehicle, it’s essential to follow a regular maintenance schedule, including oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid flushes. Additionally, avoid harsh driving habits, such as rapid acceleration or slamming on the brakes, and keep an eye on warning lights or unusual sounds that could indicate a problem. Regularly washing and waxing your vehicle also helps protect the paint and body from corrosion.
